Sophie did an outstanding job. Getting her to practice wasn't always easy, but she persisted and it finally paid off!

Back to School
Tomorrow will officially be the two-week anniversary of the first day of the 2010-11 school year, so it is high time for a Back to School post. The morning officially started when we all went downstairs and examined Alex's schultuete.
... to be continued.

10 things we love about Sophie
Sophie turned 10 on January 31st. She is our only girl and our oldest child, which makes her very special in our family! Here are 10 things we love about our little Sophie. Sorry that it took so long!
1. She is the best big sister. The boys love her, they especially love one-on-one time with her, which she is very good about. She has such great imagination and comes up with great games to play with them. During the summer break last year she had them work on little craft projects and then had a carnival celebration with them outside.
2. She is a great reader. She is always up for reading to her brothers, she makes it so fun for them. They love running to the book shelf and picking out another book, and another, and... She usually has 2-3 books that she reads at any given time. She has read the Harry Potter books so often, she probably has them all memorized by now!
3. She is a talker. I think it is an oldest child thing, she can talk to any adult about a variety of subjects. She soaks up anything she reads, watches, and hears and she will make it a point to correct you when she knows you're wrong. She has started to learn though that it's sometimes best to jsut hold your tongue, although she still likes to tell us about it afterwards!
4. She is affectionate. She still insists on a kiss good night again and again. She is always up for bussies (kisses) and hugs for her brothers.
5. She loves to learn. She is a sponge! She loves not only kiddy shows, but also TLC and the Discovery Channel. She loves to read our magazines and to keep up with all our friends and families' blogs.
6. She is a morning person. Every morning she gets herself up, dressed and ready for school. She is in a good mood most mornings.
7. She loves to laugh, tell jokes and make silly faces with her brothers. We love to hear her laugh, we know she is really happy then.
8. She is talented in so many areas. She draws well, is a good communicator, plays the piano very well, is a good listener, has a great memory and is very creative.
9. She really wants to be good. She is not perfect, but we know she has a desire to really good. When she knows she's done something she wasn't supposed to, she realizes it and feels quite bad about it. Plenty of times she has come in our bedroom at night with tears in her eyes confessing something she has done during the day, because it wouldn't let her sleep. We love that she listens to the Spirit so intently.
10.She will always be our "little girl". OK, so she is 5'4" now! When she climbs in bed with us it gets pretty crowded, but it still reminds us of when it was just the three of us for almost 5 years.
We love you Sophie and hope you have a great year!

Another first!
Sophie made her first cake all by herself yesterday. Not bad, huh? You better watch out Jen!
A little messy but it tasted delicious. Anything with dark chocolate is Elizabeth's favorite.

First Day of School
Yesterday was the first day of school for Henry and Max. They are in Pre-K, or as Max likes to say "Play-School". They woke up to discover a German tradition, the Schultüte. It is a decorated cone with school supplies, candy, chocolate, and some little gifts. They loved their new transformers!

While we were eating breakfast Alex woke up and realized he wasn't getting a gift.

Sophie is in the 4th grade this year and loves being the one to show the boys everything. She was the one to decorate the Schultuete for the boys, she loves a good surprise! She is the best at getting them excited about school because she loves it so much. The last two days, she has gotten them up and picked their clothes out as well as brushed their teeth.
We went to school on the golf cart, Alex walked into school like he owned it. He was used to the school from going there 3 times a week for Max's speech last year. Sophie led the way.

After we said our goodbyes, I had to go back to give the boys their mats that I picked up at the school office. While I was writing their names on them, I heard Max start to cry. I turned around and saw Alex with his hands in fists. I thought he hit Max, but then learned Alex bit him! What a way to start the first day of school!
Herb planned for a late lunch at home and we met them at the bus stop when they came home, they loved school. I am excited for them and all that they will be experiencing.

This morning at 7am, it was time to leave for the bus and Henry spilled milk on the table, floor and himself. It was so much that I had to change all of his clothes. Needless to say they missed the bus and Herb brought them to school.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring!!!

It even makes the sick smile!
I had to stay home with Sophie and Alex today. Sophie has strep throat and Alex a nasty cold. Alex absolutely loved the site and just couldn't get enough of the short video clips of Elmo, Buzz, and others. He had a big smile the whole time.
"Totlol is a brand new community-moderated video website designed to be enjoyed by those between the ages of 6 months and 6 years."

Interestingly enough, I think the worst for Sophie was that she didn't get to hug and kiss on Alex for the last day. She just loves her baby brother, although around noon she was wondering if Elizabeth and the twins would be coming home soon. Funny girl!

Consumed by fire, not a little girl anymore and Spidermen are ready for bed
Today was the last weekend we could burn yard debris. I had to call in for a permit, which is really more than what it sounds like. You listen to a message telling you the weather conditions are ok for a fire and then what NOT to do. That's it.
The boys were excited to build a fire, of course! I had it going for about 4 hours. Yup, we had a lot of yard trash, leaves, branches and I even had to take down three trees in He-Man fashion. I guess that's where all that German muscle I pack came in handy. No seriously, one of them I cut down with a saw, but two of them I pushed down by brute force!
Elizabeth of course made me almost cry like a little girl, when I picked up one of the trees to move. Instead she thought I meant for her to kick it really hard and break it. That thing hit the top of my foot full force and I once again confessed aloud that I'm not yet perfect... The worst of it was that my lovely wife found it funny and was laughing at me, all the time asking me for forgiveness!
After the fire had died down and all the kids and Elizabeth had gone back inside I hosed it all down for a good 20 minutes. It had been a big fire and you always want to make sure there is not a single little amber left that could then set your backyard on fire. This is what appeared:
Doesn't it look like some sickly kind of alien monster worm thingy? It sure grossed me out.
In the evening I decided that it had been quite a long time since Sophie and I want on a Daddy-Daughter date. Sicne I had already given the boys a shower earlier that afternoon I didn't feel bad to leave my wife in the dust, plus she owed me one (see above).
After a quick stop to pick up a new game for the Wii (Sega Superstar Tennis, only $19.99 at Gamespot this week) I asked Sophie on a whim if she still wanted her ears pierced? We stopped by the store, but she just wasn't quite ready she said. We went to a nice restaurant and had a fun Daddy-Daughter talk about all kinds of things. The topic of earrings came up again. I assured her it wouldn't hurt much at all, speaking from experience (Yes, there was a time in my life when I thought being a cool young man included wearing a little earring. I have since changed my ways and it's grown shut.)
Sophie asked me why I got my ear pierced if I knew it would hurt? I said because I wanted an earring more than I was afraid of the pain. That's when she decided that she wanted earrings more thatn she was afraid. So without further ado here you go, not a little girl anymore:

Coming home it was about time for the boys to go to bed. Henry insisted on wearing his old Spiderman pajamas. It old him he'd be too hot, since they are the long sleeve and long pants kind. This was his 4 year old solution to the "heat" problem:
He did agree to change into some cooler jamies after all, though.
Alex had insisted earlier to wear his Christmas pajamas. He absolutely loves them and there was no talking him out of them. He insisted I take a photo of him, too. Just like Henry he loves Spiderman and here he is showing of his jamies AND his Spiderman move at the same time:

PS: Elizabeth was supportive of Sophie's earrings, but not happy at all that I did it without her. My thought just was that Sophie would remember for the rest of her life that she got her earrings on a Daddy-Daughter date!

It's official!
Sophie has my eyes and hopefully that's the only physical attribute she has inherited from her Daddy. I don't think she'd pick up any dates at 6'4" with a goatie sprouting on her face. Although that might keep all the boys away from my doorstep....
Some time ago her school had someone come in to check all the kids' eye sight. Sophie brought home a note suggesting we take her to see an eye doctor to find out if she needed glasses. Elizabeth went to see Br Lipovac with her and yes, she needed eye glasses. She is near sided, just like me. Hopefully her eye sight will not get as bad as mine. They picked out some glasses and went to get them today.
Afterwards they swung by my office and picked me up for some yummy lunch at Partners II Pizza, compliements of Tante Sabine.
So here is my four-eyed lil' girl. Somehow she looks a lot cuter with glasses on her face than I do with mine.

Sophie's School Project
In school we did projects on the national park of our choice. I picked Zion National Park. Did you know the Pauite Indians were afraid of I-u-goone (Zion Canyon) and refused to stay there after dark. By the way Zion Canyon is not my canyon I made out of clay it's a red slot canyon called Red Cave. (My canyon made out of clay not the actual Zion Canyon.)Sophie

We will be official dog owners today!
Well, when we came home yesterday from Alabama, we found a message on the asnwering machine. We have been chosen as the new family for "Sassy", a greyhound/collie mix. We'll have to talk about the name, cause I just don't like it at all!We found her through the Newnan Humane Society and Ms. Connie, the dog's foster mom will bring her to our house tonight. Sassy and Ms. Connie had come by Saturday morning, to introduce us to her as well as inspect our home to make sure it fits the dog's needs. We liked that Sassy is easy going, laid back and just very low key.
Elizabeth and I are excited, but also a little apprehensive. Neither of us ever owned a dog. Sophie and Max are excited as well, Henry not so much and Alex loves all animals anyways.
Here is a link to her page on Petfinder.

Swimming
Probably our last time swimming this summer. Sophie truly enjoys getting into the water and it's hard to get her to get out. Max likes it, but doesn't relaly want to try swimming yet. Henry on the other hand is starting to follow his sisters footsteps. After a few minutes of being afraid, he did get into the water and was swimming (doggy paddle style) the whole time. Max eventually got into the water, while holding on to me.

American Girl Doll Atlanta
Sophie and I had a special day together August 18, 2007. The American Girl Boutique and Bistro had their Grand Opening in Atlanta.
Fortunately, we had reservations and did not have to wait in the HUGE line! Unfortunately, midway through the appetizer, Sophie got sick and rushed to the bathroom. We had to leave without finishing lunch and did not even get to shop. I'm sure my purse was happy, but I don't think there would ever be a store that could entice me to come on a grand opening day again.
These pictures were taken before the whole fiasco. We will visit the store again, but not anytime soon! It was still nice to get some girl time though, and we did get some books. Neither one of us would complain about a good read!

home with the boys
This is my first, official blog entry.!
So, Sophie is at her second day at school and I am alone with the boys. I took them to the park early, and there were quite a few men there with their grandchildren and children. Henry, I guess he misses his dad, insisted on talking to all the men. Not just a hello, but a full conversation of all the things he wanted to say....
"I like Lightening McQueen; my mommy's name is Mommy, but my Papi calls her Elizabeth; your little girl's name is Mia, I know a big girl named is Mia....."
Max wanted to swing in the handicapped swing, then he joined the conversations with Henry.
Alex just wanted to climb on everything that was not age appropriate so I had to follow him, I really miss Sophie today! She loves to take care of Alex at the park unless, of course, she is conversing with the adults or making new friends.
